# Make your website ready for AI agents

AI assistants now visit websites on behalf of your customers. AgentReady is the open standard that describes what they need from your site. Ben Blum helps your business meet it, one step at a time.

## AI agents are becoming first-class visitors

AI agents fetch pages, follow links, read documentation and act on behalf of users. They are becoming a regular kind of visitor to the web.

Most sites were never built for that audience. Sites that agents can't read or use get skipped, and the business never learns it lost the customer.

## The open standard for the agentic web

A product is AgentReady when AI agents can use it from discovery to completion. Think of it as mobile-ready, but for AI agents.

The standard is written by ora.ai and Vercel, is open source under the MIT licence, and is grounded in measurement: 1,033 real agent runs across 25 public product sites.

## Find, Read, Act

Each stage builds on the one before. Be reachable, put your answers where agents read, then let agents act.

- **Find**: Can agents reach you and cite you? Be reachable and citable. Don't block AI agents or crawlers, and give them one clear, current page to cite.
- **Read**: Can agents read your answers? Put the answer where agents read. Answers should be in the first HTML a visitor receives, with honest status codes and structured data.
- **Act**: Can agents act for your customers? Let agents act, not just read. Offer at least one interface agents can use to complete a task, such as a booking, an order or an inquiry.

## What the measurements show

Results from real agent runs in June to August 2026 explain where agents succeed, and where they give up.

- **2 changes**: Only two changes made agents fail outright: hiding answers behind JavaScript, and blocking agent access.
- **2.1x**: Sites that were not agent-ready blocked agents 2.1 times as often.
- **82%**: of agent answers traced back to a page the agent fetched. A docs page was the source 47% of the time.
- **92%**: The homepage was the agent's first step in 92% of runs where it was reached.
- **60% vs 37%**: Pricing answers built from the business's own pages were accurate 60% of the time, against 37% from elsewhere.
- **96%**: When agents specified a format, they chose markdown 96% of the time.

## Four steps from report to ready

You start with a free report and only spend more time once you know what matters most.

1. **Free AgentReady report.** We scan your site against the Find, Read and Act requirements and show what passes and what's missing.
2. **Onboarding call.** We walk through the report together and agree on priorities, starting with the MUSTs.
3. **Guided upgrade.** We guide you or your developer through the fixes, one at a time.
4. **Re-check and stay current.** We re-scan your site, confirm the result, and keep you up to date as the standard evolves.

## Being AgentReady is not giving up control

AgentReady means agents can reach and read your public content. It does not mean they can take anything they like.

- **Decide what's off-limits.** Block only low-value or private paths, such as admin areas, carts or internal pages. Everything public stays open to agents.
- **Let verified agents through.** Keep bot protection on, and allow the agents you trust to pass through it.
- **Throttle politely.** When traffic is heavy, respond with 429 and a Retry-After header, so agents know when to come back instead of failing silently.
- **Set your AI-usage preferences.** Separate who may visit from how content may be used. For example, opt out of AI training while still allowing AI answers and search. [Ben to confirm wording before launch.]

## Built for businesses that serve customers online

Small and medium businesses, from shops to SaaS products, where a customer's next step is often a question, a booking or an order.

- Shops: Products, availability and prices that agents can read and quote correctly.
- Studios: Portfolios, services and inquiry forms that an agent can understand and act on.
- Restaurants: Menus, opening hours and table bookings that agents can read and complete.
- Clinics: Services, opening hours and appointment requests, shown clearly and safely.
- Service providers: Services, coverage areas and quotes that agents can explain accurately, and requests they can submit.
- SaaS products: Documentation, pricing and sign-up flows that agents can read, and an interface they can act through.

## Common questions

**What is an AI agent?**

An AI agent is a program that uses AI to carry out tasks for a person. It can visit websites, follow links, read documentation and, in some cases, act for the user, for example by completing a booking or an order.

**Will this let anyone scrape my site?**

No. AgentReady is about letting agents reach and read your public content. It does not remove your control. You decide what is off-limits, you can let verified agents through bot protection, and you can throttle with 429 responses. Being AgentReady and being in control are designed to work together.

**Do I need a developer?**

Not for the free report or the onboarding call. Most upgrades do touch the website itself, such as robots.txt, how pages are rendered and structured data, so in practice you will usually need a developer or someone comfortable editing your site. We guide you or your developer through each step.

**How long does it take?**

It depends on the size of your site and how many fixes it needs. The free report is quick to receive, and the upgrade is paced to your priorities. [TIMELINE: typical duration for each step, to be confirmed by Ben.]

**What's in the free report?**

The report scans your site against the Find, Read and Act requirements. It shows what passes, what's missing and which items are MUST requirements, so you know what to fix first. You receive it without any obligation to continue.

**Who wrote the standard?**

AgentReady is written by ora.ai and Vercel. Version 2.0 was published in October 2026. The canonical site is agentready.org, and the standard is open source under the MIT licence on GitHub, with the dataset behind it.

**Does it help with Google too?**

AgentReady is about AI agents, not search rankings, and we do not promise any effect on Google. Several of its practices, such as answers in the HTML, structured data, a sitemap and one current reference page, are also good for search engines, so they tend to help both.
